15Nitrogen transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants in multi-species grassland Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
This study investigates the N transfer from legumes to neighbouring plants, grasses, legumes and herbs in a temperate grassland. In a field experiment white clover (Trifolium repens), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and lucerne (Medicago sativa) were leaf-labelled with 15N enriched urea. The 15N tracer was measured in above-ground plant tissue of eight neighbouring plants in two subsequent harvests in 2008. The three legumes donated 15N to all neighbouring plants, of which grasses, white and red clover were strong receivers. Results show that N transfer increases with N application and from the 1st to the 2nd cut.

15Nitrogen uptake from shallow- versus deep-rooted plants in multi-species mixtures and monoculture grassland Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
Only few studies have explored the importance of functional diversity in temperate agricultural grasslands in relation to nitrogen (N) uptake. This study investigates the consequence of growing deep-rooted plants together with grass-clover mixtures in terms of N uptake efficiency from deep soil layers. The objective was to compare the N uptake of the shallow-rooted grassland species Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens; and the deep-rooted species Cichorium intybus and Medicago sativa in monocultures and mixtures. We hypothesized that growing deep-rooted plant species in mixture with shallow-rooted species increases the N uptake from deep soil layers partly through competition. A 15N tracer study was carried out with 15N enriched ammonium-sulphate placed at...

Biomass production and N2-fixation in seven grass-legume mixtures Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
Inclusion of forage legumes in low-input grassland mixtures improves biomass production and soil fertility trough addition of nitrogen (N) from N2-fixation. The impacts of different mixture of legumes and companion grasses on the N production of the forage mixture have rarely been investigated under comparable soil and climatic conditions. We conducted a field experiment on a sandy soil at two nitrogen levels with seven two-species grassland mixtures: alfalfa (Medicago sativa), bird’s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), red clover (Trifolium pratense), or white clover (Trifolium repens) in mixture with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), and white clover in mixture with meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis), timothy (Phleum pratense), or hybrid ryegrass...

Competitive forbs in high-producing temporary grasslands with perennial ryegrass and red clover can increase plant diversity and herbage yield Organic Eprints
Dhamala, N.R.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
European agriculture focuses on increasing biodiversity. However, in highly productive temporary grasslands in grass / arable systems, the biodiversity is usually low. Three non-leguminous species have shown high competitive strength in temporary grasslands and ample possibility to increase biodiversity without compromising yields. In this experiment, we examined in detail the competitiveness and productivity of the three forb species: chicory (Cichorium intybus), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and caraway (Carum carvi) grown in different proportions in mixtures including traditional grassland species: perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) and red clover (Trifolium pratense), with fertiliser application as an additional factor. Dry matter (DM) yield...

Designing high-yielding, high-diversity and low-input temporary grasslands Organic Eprints
Søegaard, K.; Mortensen, T.B.; Eriksen, J..
Species-rich swards have received increasing interest due to their focus on ecosystem services, animal welfare and product quality. However, in high-yielding swards the proportion of herbs is often limited and there is little knowledge of their management. Seed mixture composition, cutting frequency, fertilization and grazing/cutting strategies were examined over 4 years in 3 experiments to quantify their effects on herbage yield and botanical composition. Inclusion of herbs in the sward gave similar or higher annual yields but swards established with 100% herbs depended on the presence of a driver species. The effects of management differed between species. Herb content in the sward was significantly related to the proportion of herbs in the seed...

Ecosystem services of biodiversity in organic grasslands Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Strandberg, B.; Søegaard, K..
The use of multi-species mixtures in herbage production can add value in terms of improved conditions for pollinating insects, better resource utilization, carbon sequestration, yield stability, animal health and product quality. This is the hypothesis of a new project - EcoServe - where the goal is to design grasslands, which increase both the nature value and provide an economically sustainable food production.

Effecs of including forbs on N2-fixation and N yield in red clover-ryegrass mixtures Organic Eprints
Dhamala, N.R.; Rasmussen, J.; Carlsson, G; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
Background: Legume biological nitrogen (N2)-fixation is stimulated by neighboring non-fixing species, but studies of legume N2-fixation in temporary grasslands including non-leguminous forage herb (forb) species are rare. Methodology: We investigated N2-fixation and N yield in a range of species mixtures consisting of three forb species  chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) and caraway (Carum carvi L.)  mixed into a traditional perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and red clover(Trifolium pratense L.) mixture at two fertilisation levels. Results: The percentage of red clover N derived from the atmosphere (%Ndfa) was higher in mixtures than in pure stand, but did not increase with inclusion of forbs. Red clover...

Effect of deep-rooted plant species on 15Nitrogen uptake and herbage yield in temporary agricultural grasslands Organic Eprints
Pirhofer-Walzl, K.; Eriksen, J.; Rasmussen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Høgh-Jensen, H.; Rasmussen, J..
Aims: Increase of plant diversity has been suggested to enhance grassland productivity and resource use efficiency. Most studies on agricultural grasslands have focused on functional diversity of mixtures comprising legumes and non-legumes, but there is little knowledge of plant nutrient acquisition from deep- and shallow-rooted grassland plant species. To investigate whether deep-rooted (chicory: Cichorium intybus L.; Lucerne: Medicago sativa L.) and shallow-rooted (perennial ryegrass: Lolium perenne L.; white clover: Trifolium repens L.) grassland plant species differ in herbage yield and depth dependent soil N-access, we investigated in the field if 1) a mixture comprising shallow- and deep-rooted grassland plant species has greater herbage yields than...

Effect of seed mixture composition and management on competitiveness of herbs in temporary grasslands Organic Eprints
Mortensen, T.; Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J..
In multispecies grasslands the proportion of different herb species may vary considerably due to low competitiveness of some herbs. To examine the possibility for increasing the competitiveness an experiment with three factors were set up: 1) amount of herb seed in a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne), white clover (Trifolium repens) mixture, 2) slurry application and 3) cutting frequency. The experiment was carried out over two years. The herbs mix contained salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor), fenugreek (Trogonella foenum-gruecum), chicory (Chicorium intybus), caraway (Carum carvi), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), chervil (Anthriscus cerefolium), plantain (Plantago lanceolata), Lucerne (Medicago sativa) and melilot (Melilotus officinalis). The...

Effects of grazing strategy to limiting nitrate leaching in grazed grass-clover pastures on coarse sandy soil Organic Eprints
Hansen, E.M.; Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Kristensen, K..
Urinations of ruminants on grazed pastures increase the risk of nitrate leaching. The study investigated the effect of reducing the length of the grazing season on nitrate leaching from a coarse sandy, irrigated soil during 2006-2007. In both years precipitation was above the long-term mean. The experiment was initiated in a 4-year-old grass-clover in south Denmark. Three treatments were included: grazing only (G), spring cut followed by grazing (CG) and both spring and autumn cuts with summer grazing (CGC). Nitrate leaching was calculated by extracting water isolates from 80 cm depth using ceramic suction cups. Because of considerable variation in measured nitrate concentrations, the 32 installed suction cups per treatment were insufficient to reveal...

Effects of grazing system on production and parasitism of dairy breed heifers and steers grazing wet marginal grasslands Organic Eprints
Kristensen, T.; Thamsborg, S.M.; Andersen, H.R.; Søegaard, K.; Nielsen, L..
Production and endoparasitism in first grazing season of Holstein heifers and steers were investigated in two grazing seasons, at low-lying peaty soil. In year 2000, forty animals were included in a 2 x 2 factorial, replicated experiment with two sexes (steers vs. heifers) and two stocking rates (SR): normal vs. low (840 vs. 420 kg live weight per ha at turn out) in a set stocking grazing system. Mean grass height over the entire season were 6.3 ± 4.8 cm (mean ± s.d.) at normal SR and 9.8 ± 6.1 cm at low SR. Mean daily live weight gain during grazing was significantly (P < 0.001) lower at normal SR (256 ± 147 g) compared to low (468 ± 142 g) but sex did not significantly affect the daily gain. Serum-pepsinogen levels, indicating uptake of...

Experience with grazing varieties of Lucerne Organic Eprints
Søegaard, K..
The knowledge about Lucerne as part of the grass sward in systems with intensive grazing is limited, therefore some additional registration has been made both in year 2007 when the sward was established and during the period of utilization in 2008 (Table 1). As seen, is the proportion of Lucerne in 4 of the farms both in May and August at a very low level.

Fatty Acids, α-Tocopherol, β-Carotene and Lutein Contents in Forage Legumes, Forbs, and a Grass-Clover Mixture Organic Eprints
Elgersma, A.; Søegaard, K.; Jensen, S.K..
Fresh forages are an important natural source of vitamins and fatty acids in ruminant diets, and their concentrations in forage species are important for the quality of animal-derived foods such as dairy and meat products. The aims of this study were to obtain novel information on vitamins and fatty acids (FA) in a variety of forage legumes and non-legume forb species compared to a grass−clover mixture and to explore implications for animal-derived products. Seven dicotyledons [four forbs (salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor), caraway (Carum carvi), chicory (Cichorium intybus), and ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata)) and three legume species (yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis), lucerne (Medicago sativa), and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus...

Forage legume impact on soil fertility and N balance Organic Eprints
Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, K.; Askegaard, M.; Hansen, E.M.; Rasmussen, J..
Dairy production systems in Europe are to a large extent based on ley-arable rotations. In the ley phase of such rotations nitrogen accumulation occurs as a result of (1) organic carbon accumulation in soil not disturbed by tillage operations and (2) a considerable nitrogen surplus in grasslands, particularly under grazing regimes where a large part of the N in ingested grass is recycled to soil via urine and faeces. The accumulation of N and C in grasslands starts soon after establishment, the rate asymptotically declining with age and depends on practices such as fertiliser level, animal feed composition, stocking density, length of grazing and the botanical composition of the sward. In these pasture systems, key perennial legumes are white clover...

Forage quality of cultivated and natural species in semi-natural grassland Organic Eprints
Nielsen, A.L.; Søegaard, K..
The conserve or improve floristically diverse grassland areas, there is a need for some agricultural management to avois scrub vegetation. Description of the forage quality of the most common species in these swards will make it easier to make appropriate use of the forage produced. The objective was to determine forage quality by analysing for in vitro organic matter digestibility (IVOMD) and neutral detergent fibres (NDF) of individual species commonly occurring in low lying semi-natural grasslands in Denmark. Eight species of grasses, eight herb species and one species of rush were collected in June and July under grazing and cutting. However, a large variation between species was found. The IVOMD varied from 416 to 780 g kg-1 organic matter (OM) and...
